hm. so. the HDD does the classic click for a few seconds and try again, but the fdd has no pulse at all, no lights, nothing. I'm not sure if this means it's completely dead, or something's stopping it from communicating with the rest of the computer altogether. i checked and it's a teac fd-05hg 4686-u, and i'm seeing a reasonably priced fd-05hg xxxx-u elsewhere which looks like it might be compatible, but i'm not sure if it'd be worth risking
OKAY the floppy disk drive does have signs of life actually. i might've changed something slightly when i took it apart. the light comes on and i can hear the heads trying to move but that's it. i feel like i should clean and regrease it but i'm not sure if that'll be enough
tried a new FDD of the exact same model, fit in just fine but no signs of life either... really disappointing. either both drives are duds in similar ways, or this means something is actually stopping the computer from talking to the FDD
