Some kinda large possum-dragon thing. I make art and games and worlds and code.

I also make and release music as b.trx!

You know, whatever happens with my current project, whether or not I ever make the bigger vision I have for it or move on to something else after I finish what I’m making now, I absolutely feel like i understand How To Make A Game in Godot now. Like if you gave me something to make in Godot i would just be like “yeah okay” and be able to go stumble through it just fine.

Feels pretty good, especially after all the Unity hubbub lately. I think it’s reasonable to work in Unity where it actually makes sense for an individual developer right now, whether it’s supporting legacy games, working for studios using it, doing content creation or development for VRChat, finishing existing projects, or, even reading their latest terms and deciding to take a chance on it for the next project. I think those are things that a lot of reasonable people are doing and will continue to do. But realizing that i don’t need Unity… that is still valuable to me. Knowing that i could make nearly anything I want to make using software I own a copy of forever is a powerful feeling.

And, as much as I agree with a sentiment I’ve seen expressed on here previously that you never -need- game engines, I also think that having to make your game engine -can- be a huge blocker, especially for particular kinds of neurodivergent people who will just get lost in the engine mines forever (like me, in every past failed attempt to make games only using my day job knowledge and making the engine from first principles because I couldn’t imagine how else to achieve a working game). It is really important that software as -good- as Godot exists in the FOSS ecosystem, especially as an authoring tool that can help more people make software.
