bullet reversal - through some special action (maybe destroying an enemy while using a particular weapon/mode), bullets on screen cancel, but instead of disappearing entirely or just becoming points, they become your bullets and reverse direction/attack enemies now. the weapon/mode you use to achieve this has limited usage and is charged by collecting the drops from normal bullet cancels.

It occurs to me that yes, while this is very similar to the mechanics of the capcom shmups, the thing I’d actually want to play with is specifically reversing bullets that are already on screen instead of collecting them and firing them back out from your own ship, including potentially strats where you’d actually have to let bosses and such put big dangerous special shots on screen just so you can reverse them back at the boss themselves. You don’t just need a big cluster of bullets to suck up, but you have to also think about their current trajectory (which will be reversed as well). So timing and spatiality becomes especially important for more reasons than just “i need a big cluster of bullets i can suck up” (which, of course, is also a super fun mechanic - which is why it inspires me!)

Maybe there’s some modality to this: firing with the “time gun” might reverse individual bullets as they collide with each other, but then if you actually take down a big enemy (essentially hitting the criteria for a bullet cancel in most other games that have that), -all- of that enemy’s bullets are reversed at once

This also should be paired with lots of popcorn enemies that you can kill with the reversed bullets and which will give you big points/drops perhaps when killed in this way.
