I found an old 90's site called HypArt, which was a community project to periodically release artistic collages made up of cells on a grid filled out by different artists. The art is of extremely varying quality, and some of it is downright cringe (there's a censorship-themed collage with a crying bald eagle in it that comes to mind), but I think it's pretty cool that people got together in 1994 from around the world and did what was probably extremely novel at the time. I've attached the latest one that this archive seems to have, from 1998, that had a theme of "black and white".
