Apparently another Google service is closing, as they do:

I know this is just because YouTube is slowly absorbing anything multimedia from Google, and not an actual closing of a service; Google Music became YouTube Music before YouTube Music added a podcast service to replace Google Podcasts, but...

The amazing thing about podcasts is anyone can publish them anywhere, and anyone can listen to anything they want with a tool of their choice.

Don't ever use a service trying to centralize it! All the Big Tech Giants are offering their own podcasting services, because it's the last place RSS is still dominant and they fucking hate that. They'd like you to use their apps to manage podcasts, listen to unskippable commercials, collect and sell data on what you listen to.

(On the other hand, I think about how many people probably lost access to Joe Rogan because Spotify locked him inside their walled garden, and, you know...maybe it's not all bad.)

in reply to @icculus's post:

I always hesitate to recommend pocketcasts since they switched to a subscription model I avoided by buying it before they did that. Do you know if the free version still worth recommending to folks?

i have no idea. i’m an apple user and the podcast landscape over here is both different and a lot better (for example, the default podcasts app is both pretty good and also not getting axed), all i know is that everyone i’ve seen who uses pocketcasts absolutely raves about it, even on the apple side, so it’s gotta be doing something right

I've never paid for the subscription, and it keeps working for me. I'd love to donate $5 but I'm not interested in subscriptions.

The subscription seems to be for people who use multiple phones? Cloud storage, desktop apps, and playing from your watch, and themes. I'm not sure how they could enshittify it (tho that doesn't preclude it happening).

The only podcast app feature I want is "play all unlistened episodes of all podcasts I'm subscribed to, in publication order so they end up interleaved". Can podcastaddict do that? Every app I've found so far only has the extremes of "play just this one podcast continuously" and "manually manage your entire queue".

PodcastAddict is, like, the one app on my phone that feels like it was designed to address its users needs. (Everything else feels like it's putting in the bare minimum effort needed to keep collecting & selling my data, pushing ads, or both.)

i would be surprised if google was trying to spotifyify/de-rss podcasts with youtube music. i used to use google play music before it was migrated over to youtube music and was worried that the main feature i pay for (uploading my own music to a streamable/downloadable library) was going to go away. it didn't, thankfully, but 1 thing did happen: the rss searcher/aggregator got split out into google podcasts. i think they're just bringing that back into one app like how it was for years and years.

anyway i dont really want to be supporting google but youtube music is alright. for podcasts i use beyondpod, it's the only one i like even though it hasnt really been supported for years
