after playing whack-a-mole with different position: fixed ban evasion strategies briefly last night, we've decided to ban assigning new CSS variables in inline style in your posts, bringing about the Third Age of Posting. CSS variables, while very useful, make the problem of statically determining the value of CSS properties much more difficult, and there are things we would rather spend our time on than writing a CSS static analyzer.

this ban is effective as of 6AM UTC November 14, 2022. existing posts as of this time will continue to work, but new posts will have all their variable assignments suppressed.

This list is incomplete, you can help by expanding it.

  1. the site soft-launches to friends-and-family, @g-d starts posting, the universe is at peace

  2. "slightly more" people join while invites are active, people find position: fixed and while chill, this is a sign of things to come. position: fixed is disallowed.

  3. insert dominoes meme here a white South African kid inherits a bunch of money from an apartheid-era emerald mine, goes on to buy headline positions at a bunch of boondoggles and eventually become the richest man on earth, latterly purchases a popular social media site and begins to destroy it for no apparent reason other than to become the most unfunny main character of all time on an ongoing basis, leading to many people fleeing for safer and/or saner pastures, including our good friend cohost dot org, leading to a very large influx of new users who both did not expunge their evil intents in The First Age and did not otherwise get over testing the boundaries in The Second Age, they discover a series of exploits which force the dawning of a new Age

Yeah that seems reasonable. Variables seem like the type of thing which is substantially more useful to Maintaining A Website than it is the commission of any but the most feloniest of crimes.

While this decision was reasonable and pragmatic, I do think it would have been hilarious and awesome if all the CSS crimes had led to the development of a CSS static analyzer.

Thank you for your commitment to both keeping the site usable and fostering folks' creativity. The former is part of the latter, and they are both appreciated.

you should really add contain:content; to posts, then it'll be completely impossible for any element to escape.
position:fixed will just behave like position:absolute.
