So multiple times in my life I've watched media that is near-universally praised and come out of it feeling like an alien because I genuinely can't understand the hype. It's not an issue of understanding why but not being part of the in group, it's an issue of not understanding how the in group could even exist. This happened at Fifth Element, Frozen and the most recent addition, the One Piece live action show
I watched it with my partner who's never watched One Piece and I'm only about 50 episodes in but I love it so I feel like we are a good demographic to avoid superfan blinders and have a first timers perspective.
We both don't get it. How are people saying it's good? It's incredibly rushed, does not flow at all and only makes sense to people who are already fans. I guess that's the point but then why make it? Are we really making things just so that people that already like something will watch a worse versio-oh wait I'm describing the last 15 years of popular media
Edit: I will say the live action showrunners did understand one very important thing. Zorro has the be the hottest character
