I just saw that the latest X-Men 97 episode had a really pointless and fanservicey reference to the Konami arcade game and it makes me want to rip my skin off of my body

I'm probably a huge hypocrite because I'm a gigantic sucker for the Final Fantasy 7 remake games but all of this nostalgia bait crap just seems so pathetic to me.

Though I'd argue that the FF7R games are made by people who really understand the source material, what made it good and what made people love and remember it, and who are able to channel that into novel and fun ways. It doesn't always land, and a lot of the changes make me grumble, but I still enjoy it. Stuff like X-Men 97, the new Ghostbusters movies, etc. all just feel like they just go "remember this? Remember that? Remember when you were a small soft child. You still are. Come into mother's comforting bosom."

I haven't watched X-Men 97. Maybe it's good and I'm missing out! But the whole thing being a calculated nostalgia trap just puts me off big time.

The new Ghostbusters almost had me with the ads that were more horror oriented. Then I saw one with Bill Murray and I noped the hell out. Then I heard that the EPA guy comes back and I was like “Oh, the character that ground the original movie to a halt and made the middle third a boring slog for me? Awesome. 😶”
