thing going around is one of those trad accounts posting sixpence none the richer's "kiss me" as "this is what they took from you", and i'm now old enough to have experienced in real time the kinds of things being sold to 20-year-olds as "what they took from you"

and this isn't the past, my theoretical young reader, this song is itself nostalgia. the past wasn't cleaner, you just saw it through more innocent eyes. this is nostalgic: pining for a simple, innocent, childish love affair in a world where the bad things didn't happen to them.

but nobody "took" a kinder and more twee world from you. it just never was. that's not the way worlds work!

We've lost a lot. Gained a lot, too, but lost a lot. I miss being able to see the stars, a thing I could do before LED-fueled light pollution blotted them out.

(something tells me the trad crowd would trade stars for extra-bright headlights on their high-chair trucks though, call it a hunch.)
