I made a userstyle that compresses Mastodon notifications slightly.
Fixing the issue properly most likely requires changes to Mastodon codebase as it does the same thing as TweetDeck - to support infinite scrolling of columns, individual toots/notifications are eventually removed after they drift out of view, and things get wobbly when the client expects to have added 600px worth of notifications but gets a single one instead. Cohost's "explicit" pagination is much easier to work with in this regard.
