so when i first got the tour as part of interviewing for hospital dishwasher, i saw bikes in the hallway in the staff areas and i was like "oh fuck nice, that answers my question"
and then we get to the end of my two ish hours job shadowing and i'm talking with the gal doing the hiring and i mention "the only question i had was answered when i saw bikes in the hall" and then she fires back with "what kind of bike is it" turns out you're onjly allowed to stash it inside if you have an ebike, because
Lupi11:13 AM
"electric" or something idk
my bicycles are early 2000s hardtail mtbs
so, it separates the people with enough money for cycling to be a luxury boutique mode of transport from my poor ass with my hand-me-down specialized rockhopper my dad got from his local bike shop in 2004
who do it for necessity
Lupi11:15 AM
who have learned that if they want too continue to use the city bus alongside their bicycle, they can never electrify them because the transit authority banned ebikes on front racks
for fire risk
bike commuting (gentrified) vs bike commuting (i'm broke)

i don't mean to have contempt for ebikes in an increasing number of ways but i swear it keeps happening

i get annoyed at the dumbasses who jailbreak theirs and thumb throttle down the rail trail at over 20 and just completely startle the shit out of you thats for sure

i've had eyes on the Swytch front wheel kits because i like the detachable battery thing they've got goin' on, and I only really want pedal assist so i don't mind the small capacity/range. the pedal assist would be nice if i'm towing the kiddie traielr behind me with a lotta groceries for example, or doing a bikepacking/etc.

i think it'd make more sense for moo to convert both my bikes this way than it would to get a new ebike with a built in battery and a lot of the iffy serviceability.

but i think even as stealthy as this is,, it'd probably not be allowed on buses. but then, the battery comes off and its the size of a powerbank

in reply to @lupi's post:

What on earth is the rationale for e-bikes only indoors? Other than an arbitrary filter on “we don’t want too many bikes inside but the boss wants to park his inside so it doesn’t get stolen”?

if they get rained on it sucks or something because theyre electrical (i'm sure the real rationale is "they're expensive and we have to reimburse harder if they get stolen" or something)

in reply to @lupi's post:

please don’t fit a front wheel kit. they’re not safe, they handle weird and the lack of grip makes any slippery surfaces means you’re gonna go down hard.

they’re also fucky with additional stress on your telescoping fork

if they made this equivalent kit for rear wheels or mid drive i would, personally. i'd weighed it a but and i figured that considering it was only a 250 watt motor that i probably wouldn't have too much issues with it, compared to all the banggood and baofeng and whatever kits that have like 1kw motors, it seemed like this kit was rightsized for pedal assist

i want to convert my bikes with as little impact and as little waste as possible, is part of my problem too i guess. i guess the specialized does have a bottle cage mount on the underside of the bottom tube tho which could be used to mount a battery

trust me, 250w over a greasy first rain road is too much for a front wheel. most of a rider's weight is on the back wheel, 'cos your saddle literally overlaps it

also that kit you're linking has 90 and 180 watt-hour batteries. that is terrible dogshit awful. you will be able to ride like, twenty minutes with those

yeah. it seemed to make sense as a "minimal impact, pedal assist ONLY" kit though, i prized the detachable battery specifically for being that small and easily handleable
i just want a little bit of starting help now and again but i don't mind doing most of the pedalwork to bolster my efforts, so i guess i gotta keep looking for something that hits those "things i want out of this" marks while not sucking i guess

honestly a 250w rear hub and a battery that fits where a drinks bottle normally goes will be absolutely fine

sorry to shit on what you picked out but i really do think front hub pedal assist is an inherently dangerous combination
