There's an interesting logic in Journey to the West where many of the demons the pilgrims encounter are just animals that learned some daoist magic and used it to take the form of a demon. Their true form is always like, a stoat or a marmot or something. The implication that real demons are mostly chilling in the under world and the ones you find on earth are mostly just guys summoning the power of a demon without being one by nature is interesting. I'm not even halfway through the story though so maybe real demons do become more common. Or maybe I'm misinterpreting the story and it doesn't actually see a difference between a stoat disguised as a demon and a "real" demon.
