  • snappy and iconic names consisting of a two-syllable word and a one-syllable word being put together
  • fandoms infamous for backseating streamers
  • strong initial experience, and a lot of youtube content about people playing the games/listening to the music for the first time
  • fandoms that love their games to death but can end up alienating people by accidentally overhyping them, especially to the wrong audience
  • visionary lead developers who are musicians and already have the whole story and lore put together in their heads, and are just laying it out for us as they build the game
  • dev teams that started with one person but grew over time as the project grew
  • “second-in-command” for the lead developer who’s been there for a very long time (toby fox/temmie chang, hakita/pitr)
  • obscure boss fights that are the hardest in the game, have IMMENSE story significance, and are some of the highest points of games already filled with peak, but have had their impact lost somewhat by cultural saturation
  • UT/UK: violence is an important thematic component, but in the case of ultrakill it’s not clear where it’ll end up1
  • DR/UK: religion is an important thematic component, but in the case of deltarune it’s not clear where it’ll end up2
  • DR/UK: the plot and themes and lore are very interesting to think about, but the games aren’t fuckin done yet, so the story analysis/theory community is kind of left in a frustrated restless state due to running out of things to talk about, but knowing There Is More To Talk About, since information about the full picture is purposefully being withheld until the rest of the story is done
  • DR/UK: consequently, many fanworks revolve around speculation about what the rest of the game might be like. deltarune for future chapters and superbosses, ultrakill right now for fraud, treachery/gabriel, and in particular stuff revolving around the last prime soul. actually, speaking of which:
  • a lot of narrative weight regarding souls and their power, in particular:
  • UT/UK: locking away people for having certain kinds of souls that are considered dangerous, and a particular focus on the relative power of different souls, and how certain others3 react to it
  • UT/UK: they are literally right next to each other on tvtropes

  1. i guess there’s really only one way for it to end up on a direct level—hell is finally bled dry and V1 starves to death—but how exactly we get there and what it ends up meaning is another thing entirely. there could also be something completely out of left field that makes for a way weirder/more interesting ending that i just Cannot predict yet bc it hasn’t been introduced yet

  2. i guess there’s really only one way for it to end up on a direct level—the prophecized roaring happens and the party banishes the angel’s heaven—but how exactly we get there and what it ends up meaning is another thing entirely. there could also be something completely out of left field that makes for a way weirder/more interesting ending that i just Cannot predict yet bc it hasn’t been introduced yet

  3. do the heaven freaks even have souls?
