Daeren

Autistic, Librarian, Writer

  • He/him

Shambling pile of learned responses and special interests in a trench coat. Wrote and done some shit you might've heard of before. I was there when the deep magic was written and honestly I wouldn't recommend the experience.

I suppose it's about time for me to actually like, post a thing instead of having this compose tab open for a few days because of the fact that vague social anxieties somehow translate to hollering into the void of a blog shaped site thing that has a mascot named eggbug (eggbug is a good mascot)

I go by Daeren on the internet, and have for a while now. The most personal information you're gonna get out of me unless I know you well is that I work in a public library, and that despite being having the same (good, supportive, non-garbage-practices) therapist for a very long time I only recently got a late diagnosis as autistic because I am Too Good For My Health at reflexively masking.

My interests vary based on whatever my hyperfixated ass is slamming against today like a moth against a lightbulb, but the ones that don't change are equity/justice, tabletop roleplaying games (playing, running, or designing), video games, and writing. I am the social shape that is either quiet and unobtrusive to the point of being easily overlooked, or gets activated and becomes near incapable of shutting the fuck up.

Some shit you might recognize me from:

  • I did some Let's Plays like a decade ago jesus christ, including a Breath of Fire 4 screenshot LP. They are Extremely the product of a younger me that is now frozen in amber and had a lot of growing and learning to do, but I'm still fond of some of them. Also internet taxonomy has shown I accidentally invented a meme in those LPs that became so mainstream I've seen my coworkers use it. I still don't know how to feel about that.

  • Posting way too much about World/Chronicles of Darkness on SomethingAwful's traditional games board, and writing some (largely unfinished) RPG reviews for their threads about those. See above about how things age.

  • I was a player on the Goonstation branch of Space Station 13. If you ever got beaten to death by (or murdered) Ensign Daeren, or a clown just named "clown", that was me. I was also in of some of the stories people circulate a lot about that era of SS13, like THE PHANTOM OF THE BATHTUB or the time the admins held a trial over a wizard getting shaved. I eventually became an admin and coder, and survived staring into the ark of the covenant that was closed source Goon code. The major shit I did feature-wise was designing the Wraith antagonist, a cocktail overhaul, and a bunch of really goofy gimmick items. You probably actually remember my admin years for my frequent use of the Badmin Buttons to make things entertaining. (Before you ask, no, I don't know what current Goonstation's like, I kinda drifted away from it a few years ago. I'll probably end up telling old stories on here though.)

  • Through a series of hijinks, I got hoisted into a group of Twitch streamers playing the original board game that the Europa Universalis video games are based on. It was a miserable, fascinating experience. This led to me I running an Actual Play of Exalted 3e (porting to Essence near the end) for that group called Crimes of Nature. I'm gonna actually link this one as I'm very proud of it and also all of the players are extremely cool people and you should follow the stuff they do on Twitch and elsewhere. The Pit Crew's good people.
