Shambling pile of learned responses and special interests in a trench coat. Wrote and done some shit you might've heard of before. I was there when the deep magic was written and honestly I wouldn't recommend the experience.

With sick and disabled people physically and psychologically distanced from them, people who are well and non-disabled have detached themselves from the immorality of their own behavior. "Return to normal" frames indifference to suffering as a morally neutral position and public health as a matter of personal preference. But there is no neutrality in the individual actions that comprise public health; they either cause harm or prevent it. Segregating the "unfit" from the "fit" is not a matter of debate. It is an abomination and a core tenet of eugenics.

It is unbelievably dispiriting to see so many people passively embracing the quiet eugenics of "return to normal". Every time I see a friend's photo in a restaurant, every time I'm on a video call with a group of unmasked coworkers, every time I drive through the city and see everyone acting like it's 2019 it rubs my soul raw. I don't talk about it much anymore because after three years it's a bit boring, but it is a constant and debilitating emotional drain.

I'll end this bummer of a post with a tumblr screenshot that hasn't left my head for a moment since I first saw it.

ladyshinga: it hurts seeing so many friends enjoying a society without immunocompromised/disabled people in it

🦌: But what about the other deer? The ones who live a kilometer away? Should I just frolic and celebrate the good weather while they are torn apart by wolves?

🦝(the raccoon is the deer's therapist): Are you going to go help them?

🦌: I do help! A little bit. I'm only a deer myself so I can't do much. I send them a little money (a few bucks) but mostly I feel for them. I argue on their behalf. I have the right kind of opinions about them. I am very pro-deer and anti-wolf and everyone in the Deerternet knows it!

🦝: Does this help them so much that it was worth living in fear? And do you need to be constantly aware of every wolf to give this help?

🦌: Maybe not, but what about my own safety? Sometimes the wolves a kilometer away are heading towards me! It's better for me to know when they're 950 meters away than be helpless until it's 250.

🦝: And yet you see wolves 950m away all the time and you don't run. You worry, but you tell yourself "maybe they're just passing through, maybe they're after someone else; I'll wait and see what happens" until they're within 250m anyway.

🦌: Look, the real problem is that wolves are out there, at any distance. And they'll still be out there no matter whether I know it or not.

🦝: So why is it important for you to know it? Or at least, why is it important for you to know it in intricate detail with multiple daily updates?

🦌: ...I have decided to re-dedicate my life to the appreciation of birdsong and fresh green leaves.
