@GFD

as we near another of your federal election cycles, i’m seeing more and more untagged US politics on my timeline. in 2016, when i was only on Twitter, i had to abandon my timeline for years because there were no real CW controls, which made seeing all that stuff truly inescapable (no amount of unfollowing would ever have helped).

i’m Canadian. i can’t vote Biden in your election even though i will hear about it and it will affect me. cohost in particular remains a very US‐centric space (being based there will naturally do that), but please remember the USA is not the “default”. and to that end, please don’t just tag with #politics instead of also using #uspol — i still want to see my local politics, and would rather not block out all politics just to avoid US politics specifically. i try to tag my Canadian politics (on the rare occasions they’re discussed here) because i know they’re not relevant to most people, so i would appreciate being extended the same courtesy.

on a more meta note: this is the only filtered tag i have, so i don’t know how filtering works with regards to shares (does a whole share chain get filtered if only one post has #uspol? does someone adding it to their own share make it get filtered properly? edit: no and no; see here) and so can’t give more specific advice on this. making your own properly‐tagged post with a hyperlink to a post you want to share that isn’t itself tagged would definitely work though, and i see people on Mastodon do this often enough. (my Mastodon feed is much better about uspol CWs than cohost is, so i don’t feel a need to make a similar request post there right now.)

well anything specific works as long as it’s used consistently. this is just the CW i’m familiar with. i could easily also muffle “#usa politics” or whatever if i saw it in use.
