I think it was the last time where AAA devs were really able to experiment in a way that is incredibly rare now. Dev costs and marketing costs and all that hadn't hit the incredible highs they have since, so there was a little more wiggle room for games that weren't genre defining super critically acclaimed deals, and multiplayer games didn't have to be constant money makers. I hope we manage to get back to that space again some day.
