Watches too many horror movies.

That is, finished the original series. Still got End and the Rebuild movies to go, though I'm probably going to take a little break to think about the series before I get to Rebuild.

Fans of anime from that era, any good recs? I really dug this series and would love to see more like it, but definitely don't let that limit what you recommend. I definitely haven't watched as much 90s anime as I should, so there's a good chance you don't need to dig deep to find something I haven't seen.

  • Revolutionary Girl Utena: my favorite show of all time, I could probably write an entire essay on it at the drop of a hat
  • Cowboy Bebop: a much more straightforward show than Evangelion or any of these other shows I’m naming, but it’s a great time if you’re just looking for some fun and incredibly well-executed adventure stories. One of the few cases where the English dub is the definitive version for me.
  • Serial Experiments Lain: immaculately strange and unsettling vibes, I honestly can’t even tell you if I “enjoyed” watching it, but I definitely found it fascinating
  • The Big O: the least well-known name on this list, but definitely the most similar to Evangelion, since it’s also a mecha show that gets extremely weird and metaphysical at times, only with more of a noir vibe and a protagonist who is basically Bruce Wayne

If you want something on the complete other end of the spectrum from EVA in terms of tone, try GaoGaiGar. It's sort of heightened, played completely straight Saturday morning super hero mecha from the same era.

There's also Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. Insanely good OVA series.

I'd also reccomend some of Gainax's other work, Gunbuster and Diebuster, Nadia the Secret of Blue Water. Gunbuster especially is a real spectacle.
