It feels nice and welcoming and like you'll get along when everyone else also stops while they're doing in case they get to see a cool bird. But you know when I've felt the most welcome?

While I was pulling weeds at a different natural area, one that's in my neighborhood, I met some of my neighbors. And one of them was telling me about how she used to live here 40 years ago, moved away and moved back recently. And she was delighted by how many more bugs and birds she was seeing, probably because the natural area had brought back a lot of biodiversity. She says she's not a bird person so she doesn't know exactly what kinds of birds she's seeing now that weren't here before, and she asks me "are you a bird person?"

I joke that I recently became one "to an annoying degree"

And she says, with so much sincerity: "I love being annoyed by bird people!"

And like, that attitude? That is the clearest sign I'll get along with whoever. I also love being annoyed by bird people. And plant people. And art people, history people, architecture people. Once I listened with rapt attention while a building inspector explained how a specific kind of furnace worked for twenty minutes because he was just so into it I could not help but be interested.

Anyway meet your neighbors they may be cool
