Tom Clancy's The Division: Agent Origins Review

This is dumbest recommendation I'll make for a while. Having just purchased The Division (PS4) I sat thru all thirty minutes of this stitched together web series. I'm also not one for supplemental material. I never understood the appeal of reading tie-in Star Wars novels or a comic series that continues a canceled TV show. I'm rarely thirsty for more right after any movie, game or show. If I want more I'll just seek out what else the creative leads have worked on.

So watch this? Agent Origins is exactly the kind of advertising you get from a AAA release that isn't willing to take any chances with gaining your attention. Indie filmmakers were hired to script and shoot simple set pieces bookended with improved humor and tame drama. Oh, and bad acting. Yes, it looks like it was shot in someone's backyard. Yes, it has the same fascist leanings as the French made game about Feds killing civilians to protect.......civilians?

It's trash, straight up. But man, is it fun. Who would have thought this low budget effort would feature genuine squibs!? Competent choreography and editing make every scene (without dialogue) tense and involving. I dare say there is a bit involving the slide on a handgun I had not seen before.

There's little else to recommend the short. It's time as a FOMO inducing sales piece for a 2016 game has come and past. I found it skimming endlessly through Amazon Prime's deluge of B action flicks and it's often hard to commit to even a ninety minute feature if all you really want is a little adrenaline. That's the one area Agent Origins is timeless. It's the immediacy of YouTube with the pointless violence of every Scott Adkins film.

Sharing this old post bc the first Division game is set during the holidays and its New Hears Eve as I write this. Even redownloaded the second game recently, a game that has the audacity to tell me how long its been since I last played, 1200+ days. Idk, this jingoistic series is stupid fun in multiple senses. Give it a shot. Or just watch this terrible/wonderful web series.
