Satisfying tug-o-war arguments that never overstay their welcome buoy this melodrama with some simple filmmaking I wish we saw more of today. Imagine, dialogue scenes not made up entirely of shot-verse-shot! The three leads are captivating even as they begin to feel one note over time. The only real dud of a performance is Judd Hirsch, whose face and voice I love, but I feel literally any jewish actor could pull off, or hell, even this jewish writer. I do take issue with the suburban Chicago setting of course, and the title as well. The trouble is this pleasantly affecting film humanizes wealthy wasps, the kind that donate to the campaigns of democrats, and there’s a danger in that. I’m not saying I’d prefer another poverty porn drama, but I am saying if we’re making a movie around people who live lives that are extraordinary to 80% of the population, I’d like some extraordinary conflict.
