Just noticed there is no “movie podcasts” tag so here’s a tag and list to start with.
Horror Vanguard: leftist deepdives into horror media, short episodes that forego plot recaps in favor of analysis either directly or point-of-departure, i.e. what The Relic (1997) tells us about museums as an industry.
The Important Cinema Club: conventional movie podcast going over the history of a single subject for every episode, be that directors, film movements, culturally historic moments. Expect lots of B movie, experimental, and early 20th century love here. They also talk about classic porn.
Michael & Us: all about movies and the politics there of, a sister podcast to TICC, they’ve both approachable and highly specific. Coining the term “politics, what a concept” their meat and potatoes are political dramas and docs from the 1990s, their title refering to patron saint Michael Moore, whose filmography they started with. My current fave.
Bad Romance: a rom-com focused show covering millennial faves with a few forays into the more obscure. They mostly cover films you’ve long forgotten or dismissed, not so much for the sake of reappraisal as for investigating why the genre holds such a grip on us.
The Bechdel Cast: the 2nd most recognizable pod on this list. You know already if it’s for you and if not I’d recommend you try their episodes on the live action Dora the Explorer movie and But I’m a Cheerleader.
You Must Remember This: the very last of these pods you should worry yourself with giving money, but easily the best on film history. Karina Longworth does the work to recall the too short lives of golden age Hollywood starlets, take the temperature of sex on film in the 80s & 90s, and in easily her best series, tears down the pop culture myths of the Manson family. Highly recommended.
