Aftersun Review
Very good. Love a coming of age story not set in school & the simple ways Sophie quietly becomes more independent. Very real depiction of depression with the dad. This isn’t subtle filmmaking, but it is subtle storytelling. There’s a streak of tension cast across the whole thing that holds you, prepares you for the worst, just like how the framing reminiscence does the way only retrospection can. Only bit that really didn’t work was the strobing light. This stuff felt kinda literal and pops up too often even as the payoff (walking thru that door) is great.
