The coming AI winter is going to fucking rule. Generative ML is all snake oil shit there's no real end-user business model for and it's not AI so the same basic scaling problems that made things not meaningfully scalable beyond toy problems in the 80s still apply. This wouldn't be true if it were being sold as better autocomplete but they're trying to convince everyone it's Real Deal AI and it just isn't.

I have seen so many credulous articles about how AGI is just around the corner as LLMs get bigger and bigger, and it strikes me as not much different from medieval tinkerers gluing more and more feathers to a wooden frame and claiming that human flight is just around the corner.
