Leaving aside everything else the single thing I have found most shocking in the Recent Unpleasantness is people using the term "carpetbaggers" to refer to people coming in from other sites. Like holy goddamn fuck shit, do people not know where that comes from?

Yeah I mean maybe awareness of it is a regional thing? I'm Canadian and during our most recent federal election campaign there was a minor controversy in which an incumbent MP used that word to describe his challenger, who didn't live in the district she was running in. Neither he, the challenger, or any of the news outlets that picked up the story seemed to have any awareness of any connotations it had beyond "an outsider with an agenda" (despite all being educated and presumably quite sensitive to the value of symbolic language)
I mean, I grew up in Canada and we learned about that term in the context of the American Civil War. It's still appalling that it's gotten laundered into that kind of casual usage.
