when i play old games on DosBox, i could choose to make them run perfectly smooth, but instead i make them run as slow as they did when i played them on a 386/486, because it feels wrong otherwise

Making a dosbox fork that includes settings for "how often your parents pick up the phone when you're online" and "speaker hum because those shitty desktop speakers you got at radio shack needed a ferrite core on the power and didn't have one"

It's a turn-based game so the move & animation speed doesn't affect gameplay. But during the alien turn your only intel about what the computer is doing is seeing their units move. The range of acceptable speeds is pretty broad, but gaming computer starting exiting that range around the turn of the millennium.
