As an idea, it's been tried and abandoned, but what if not? How effective could a hail of tiny bullets like that be? And, given the size and obvious control advantages, could .22's be used effectively for machine-pistols?
I mean if you could make a reliable mechanism it's an interesting idea for, like you said, a machine pistol, and suppressing fire from a .22 machinegun is going to be perfectly fine for keeping most infantry from wanting to get too close to you. I don't see it making a ton of sense for eg US military doctrine but for non-state actors...
