dumb late-night project idea that seems regrettably hard to actually realize because these chips aren’t available on the open market: a Zigbee-based Home Assistant sensor board that integrates the infamous Maxwell HSN-3000 Nuclear Event Detector, a radiation-hard, high-speed IC that provides a single-bit output telling you whether a nuke just went off or not
what would you automate with it? who knows
would your home automation setup survive long enough for that bit to make it from the HSN-3000 through the microcontroller on the sensor board, over the airwaves, into your zigbee hub, through home assistant, into prometheus and onto your grafana dashboard? well, are we talking electrically or physically here? electrically? no. physically? … probably also no.
20ns switching time on the sensor and then wait measured in tens of seconds as twenty thousand lines of python call fifty different services before turning something off
