I remember the period around 2010 when the Canon 5D Mk2 came out and a lot of people were very excited about the possibilities of digital. And in some way that came true in the form of youtubers. For movies digital cameras could (and would) become an interesting tool for low light conditions, moving beyond other limitations of the film stock, or creating more spectacular shots. From an artistic perspective it could have become another tool in the toolbox.
But what the article neatly explains is that the studio executives and beancounters only cared about money and control, and pushed for digital only.
In 2012 this hit me personally, because I was just learning how to photograph using film when Hollywood canceled their print film orders and Kodak almost went under. Thankfully this didn't happen, but there could have been a future where analog film wasn't an option. I still have a reminder of that era in the form of the Kodak film I stockpiled.
