"There is no ethical consumption under capitalism" is a statement about the general conditions of capitalist production, an understanding that we all make compromises to survive and an implication that the position of the working class under capitalism cannot be understood or improved through the lens of consumption. It is not a license to make the worst choices you can or give your money to fascists because you really like their chickie nuggs.

I think you'll find that it gives me carte blanche to get really angry and defensive online about only eating Kellogg's® Frosted Mini-Wheats™ when the factory workers are striking and have called for a consumer boycott
if you buy chick-fil-a you are funding conversion camps. full stop. and yet people (i saw a post here on cohost, made within the last week) will still go off about how good the chicken is though. the poster directly acknowledged that they think the chicken is so good that it's worth torturing queer kids for.
I think it also helps give permission to not worry endlessly about purchasing choices, because most of them don't matter that much and won't change the circumstances of exploitation we live under. Supporting bigots is still bad tho.
