I'd argue the source code being open or not doesn't matter that much. Bluesky, for instance, is open source (the proto, the web app, etc) but is still funded by VC capital with no clear communication on what the business model for the company is supposed to be.

Exactly. Twitter's problem was always that it didn't have a way of making income and there really wasn't an obvious way of getting to one. Seeing Tumblr flail with trying to monetise while not alienating their users (and to some degree failing at both) is an interesting lesson in the perils of assuming you have a path to turning your service into something that pays for your company. Popularity and the ability to bring in money not being directly correlated, really blows 65% of the late-00s to late-teens start-ups out of the water.

Huh! Yeah idk how much money there’s into that like… they’re partnering with Namecheap so I’ll assume whatever money a customer pays for their domain will be split between Namecheap and them so, like, that’s not that much.
