i wonder if it means anything that the last like 6 Big Technological Crazes have all been scams and flops. it's probably fine and not a symptom of any kind

I'm at the point where I personally don't believe quantum computing is a threat because it's yet another thing IBM has pivoted to bet the farm on, like "blockchain" and "AI" before that

@pendell

Quantum computers are only useful for, like, researchers decoding genomes and shit.

Quantum computing has a large number of real, good and useful potential applications but they require approaching the technology with humility and on its own level instead of It Is Going To Change The World Just Like The Internet, It Is A New Revolution, Please Buy Our Dumb Bullshit so I have no hope now that it will ever develop into a fully useful form, just like machine learning now.

What would be the "fully useful form" of machine learning? I have no doubt about the potential of machine learning to learn and automate tedious tasks (the natural extension of computer programs) but the current high-profile usecases of AI (ChatGPT in my mind) seem really underwhelming.

Yeah, I've heard of the bread AI thing and it seems to be the logical extension of what computers are good at - running small repeatable tasks quickly to achieve a large outcome. Like, how a computer can do a very complex task (videogame) by doing the smallest tasks (idk, drawing vertices or something) very quickly

I work for a tech company and Upper Management just brought down it's top 10 directives for the year. Almost all include vague references to """Gen AI"'" that even our actual ML specialists have no idea about. In practice it becomes a terrible "AI" support chatbot seemingly designed to obfuscate your problem and hide the fact that you can file a support ticket at the very end. That's where Im coming from so Gen AI seems really underwhelming.
