"There's no ethical consumption under capitalism" is a statement whose actual intended meaning has two prongs:
- Every "choice" of consumption under capitalism is subject to critique because capitalism is inherently harmful
- You should reset your understanding of your position in capitalism from "consumer" to "worker" because identifying with the consumption itself is paralytic
People who take it to mean "I can do what I want and there's no ethical valence to any choice" are rejecting both of these; "I am above critique and so is my position as a consumer." But not all choices are of equal ethical weight.
Since we're having AI art discourse this morning apparently, I've seen various defenses of such that mainly boil down to, one of "what even is art, man," or "I'm too cute/popular to critique," and instead of being defensive, just be honest. These things are harmful, there's no denying that, and they are exploitative or there wouldn't be wailing and gnashing of teeth from "artists" who won't even come up with a better prompt than "trending on artstation", and people who make the ML models that produce this stuff wouldn't be so reticent to respect the desire of artists to not be chewed up for their training sets.
We make choices every day and most of those choices are suboptimal, or they're optimal given the very fucked up constraints under capitalism. We should be conscious of the impact our choices have. I think about this every time I have to get an Uber or Lyft to get downtown because transit in West Seattle has gone to hell and it's impossible to call a regular cab half the time because they're having to focus on the airport routes that reliably pay the bills. And there are red lines; I don't buy things listed by the BDS movement or cross picket lines. Being aware and conscious of the things you do should be the absolute fucking bottom for anyone who contends to be on the left in any sense.
So be honest. We all make tradeoffs but at least be aware of what those tradeoffs are. And if you can't live with yourself being conscious of that, make different choices.
