So if I was to fire up emacs and write a basic notepad-ish text editor for windows in plain old C I could do it in a few hundred lines of code, without using anything but the basic Win32 API. Can I do the same on Linux, just using base system and X11 APIs? No, of course not, why would you think that. Use a widget toolkit. You have a variety to choose from: GTK, or... Open Look? Motif?? Fucking Xaw???
Most everything modern except GTK demands C++ which makes it effectively unusable from any language other than C++! Why the fuck!
