the vrchat sdk has a lower limit on what size of avatar you're allowed to upload

it does not seem to have an upper limit

however, at 1000ft, menus are broken on desktop preventing you from swapping to any other avatar - had to map the "emergency exit" key combo ( Ctrl+\ ) on my Steam Deck

spent some time earlier thinking of very Normal solutions to this problem 1 and maybe do some other things while I'm at it

OSC Avatar Parameters

Avatar Changes

When a new Avatar is loaded by the local player with OSC enabled, a message will be sent to /avatar/change with the ID of the avatar.

as it turns out, this particular OSC message appears to be one way (from VRC to a receiver program), so back to the drawing board on that one unless i'm screwing something up

oh well. i now have an idea of a few other things i want to do with this anyway, even if they'll be a little less effective without being able to swap the base

  1. the actual lowercase-n normal solution is of course to simply not upload very, very large versions of your avatar, but where's the fun in that

in reply to @Dex's post:

The greater than 5m limit is a suggestion, but it doesn't block uploads (if that's also the only reason why an avatar is "Very Poor", it also apparently doesn't block it for performance reasons according to here, which I was not aware of) - unlike the less than 20cm limit which will block the upload.

It's not something most people will be doing so I can understand thinking it's a hard limit - but if there was an enforced max of 5m, that would definitely have convinced some friends to look more seriously at Chillout.
