we've got three Settings for asks:

  • on or off
  • allow anons
  • require anons to be logged in

the third setting is one missing from other ask platforms (tumblr, retrospring, etc) and provides the use case of "anons available for users who are shy/would prefer to stay on anon, but preventing the sort of drive-by harassment that can come from just opening an incognito window." also means you can block specific anons1.

also: everything is opt-in. once we ship asks, you'll have to go in and enable them so that you don't just start Getting Messages. anons are also off by default, and requiring logged in anons is on by default, but they're all in the same settings for so it doesn't really matter that much overall.

this is all coming together, but it won't ship for a little bit b/c it needs UI and aidan's out of office for the next few days. hoping it have it all set next week.

  1. we're gonna try doing this in a way where you can block an anon from sending asks, but it's a different type of block from a Full Block so that you can't use it to unmask who sent an anon. tricky to handle, but i remember the era of tumblr where you could Do That and it caused more harm than good. so avoiding doing that here.

You must log in to comment.

in reply to @jkap's post:

also requiring asks to be logged in sounds nice because you could actually report anon asks then. sounds like it would have the least amount of abuse both from askers and curious users

tumblr actually just verrrry recently started requiring all anon messages to still be logged in, so that reports Actually Work. it's not even a setting, it just Is.

(which, on the one hand, is good? cos harassment. but on the other hand, with other things like the "hey you read too much of this post without being logged in, you should log in/make an account" thing, feels like they're walling in the garden bit by bit)

for point 3, will the anon block be an account-wide block so they can't just flip over to a sideblog on the same account to evade the block and keep on harassing? i really like that login requirement i just wanna make sure it's a total account block because of how easy it is to set up sideblogs
