for a while, i've had my eye on a flipper zero (if you're not familiar, it's a multipurpose handheld hacking device crossed with a virtual pet), but one of the things i've struggled with is "how would i use this long term if i'm not interested in being an inconvenience for others"
- i could clone my work ID for days I'm in the office, but the physical security policy means that i'd need my work ID on me anyway. (also this one likely has Consequences if discovered.)
- i could use it as an expensive bluetooth camera remote for my phone... but i also have a poundland bluetooth camera remote around somewhere (or i can use my watch if i don't have bappy fursuit paws on that hand)
- i could pentest my home network, but i could also put kali on an old laptop and do that if it was truly interesting
- i could use it as a TV remote but also i could just get up and get the remote
- i could use it to clone or π΄ββ οΈ toys to life figures, but i'm very infrequently playing games that use them (additionally, while it would work fine for amiibo, i don't think it's designed for the more constant read/write of the games with dedicated portals, it's either in read or write mode? could be wrong but i think those would still need NFC cards)
- i could use it for FIDO auth, but given that it can also act as a usb rubber ducky, this feels like it'd be asking for trouble later down the line
and then, this week, i've actually thought of something
pokemon stop
since i returned to pokemon go in 2018, i've made fairly heavy use of companion devices for convenience and accessibility reasons (go isn't the easiest game to play with a crutch or cane)
these allow for things like automatically getting resources or automatically catching pokemon while not looking at your phone. most of the official devices have some significant drawbacks in comparison to the third party ones
last week, nintendo released the pokemon go plus + (named that way because it's a replacement for the old "go plus"). the main thing this is for is sleep tracking using either go or pokemon sleep, but it also boasts a few other unique features within go that currently even third party devices do not have.
however, it also features a very obnoxious rumble motor that needs to be physically desoldered to turn it off, LEDs so bright that they're visible through your average jeans pocket (I can only assume to really annoy people who were planning on using it for sleep tracking?), and the new features it adds require manually hitting a button on the device rather than being automatic (with those LEDs lighting up every single time you hit the button)
and so i wonder, if it would be possible to capture whatever bluetooth signals are sent when you hit the button and have the flipper do them automatically
make an app that would emulate being my own third party device
(on the other hand, this would be a whole lot to spend on a game i'm generally trying to move away from outside of big events)
