Okay so. I'm going into this with full sincerity. I know people liked this one. But here's the thing. I even like weird styles of little mecha but a friend sent me this image of the one from Avatar that everyone was losing their minds over years ago and I am just unimpressed with it, and I specifically feel it's the legs and the cockpit that I just do not like the design of. There might be robots that are worse overall but they are more memorable so in a way that makes them less bad, whereas I feel like this thing is the most generic possible 'we're doing a mech in a hollywood movie' thing imaginable, and that generic feeling makes me hate it even more than something like Godmars which I just find ugly.
Avatar is fundamentally blue striped cats fighting giant robots and I hate it.
It's like, it completely fails to get what's appealing about any of these things. There's this pedestrian incuriosity to the designs. They're scared of the weird cat aliens looking too much like animals so they end up just looking like humans. They're scared of the mecha designs looking too goofy so they look like industrial equipment but not even like...extrapolating any of the design language the actual military uses. Nor do they look jank enough to convey the idea of something bodged together and prototyped with a minimum of refinement.
Just incredible how much money this movie puts behind the most boring version of every idea. Just tragic.
