was reminded from @cathoderaydude's recent thrifts video about the once ubiquitous portable DVD player, now finding its home in branches of Cash Converters and lofts/attics everywhere

and as @-pegasus pointed out yesterday, B&M here in the UK will sell you a brand new one for THIRTY FIVE FUCKING QUID (ON SALE) 1

and just look at this thing. if this were genuinely a new product rather than a rebadge at best of stock from ~2006, it has made no evolutional leaps whatsoever to try and stay relevant.
the AV in port is perfect for your gamecube, but anything newer might be a problem.
the ratio of screen to bezel is still so far in favour of the bezel for the cheapest speakers they could find.
there's no bluetooth, so you're not broadcasting your modern music through these things. hope you still have headphones with a 3.5mm jack!

i remember carrying around our portable DVD player and a folder full of discs on holidays that i'm now sure were probably pretty exasperating for family

...and then we got a PSP, and the portable DVD player effectively never left its carrying case again 2
and now it's either in the loft or gone, as is their inevitable fate

give it 10 years, and there will be people on youtube putting more effort than they should into repairing these, if that isn't already happening
and they will all segue into the final part of the video with "so what can you do with this? well, not much"
(at least CEX will probably have expanded their range of 50p DVDs even more by then... for movies and shows that are still being released on there rather than being streaming only)

  1. (~44.51 fucking united states dollars, as of time of posting)

  2. maybe once or twice for some US DVDs that would really fuck up on playback on a PAL TV
