vr plans and desires for this year

warning: long and probably boring post under the jump! but eh, good to organise things and be a little publicly accountable rather than just journaling

avatars

me

secret project (2024.1)

done save testing and resulting tweaks - just needs uploading before that can be done.

main avatar

  • also updated with some things to hopefully fix the impostor settings (or at least mitigate the issues a little?)
  • want to modify tail animation controller to not auto play animations if full body tracking is detected, while still giving the option for manual activation

at some point this year i would still like to commission a "HD remake" model - it's been wonderful learning on something with this level of flexibility but it's also a little distracting looking down and seeing PS2 geometry struggle a little with the angle my legs are at.

soapcat

now that i have the files for this, i at least want to make it more comfy while still keeping it simple; basic audiolink, vrclens, gogoloco for when it's cold and i don't want to use trackers, just the key things that keep us from using it more often.

yinglet

plan is to purchase avi's low poly yinglet as soon as it becomes available, but i don't know that i'll get to customising it until a little later - but it sounds like there's some things on za roadmap after the 1.0 release

main avatar

needs a bodysuit as a quick texture swap, and may add a little oscillating levitation

wolf

...several months on, still need to purchase one, even though we know which base to go for. maybe that'll be a project for next month. maybe we'll go in yet another direction

general

  • aside from new bases that need it, i don't really want to do too many texture tweaks at the moment... until furality announces their theme, at least.
  • we keep running into upload errors from unity 2022 on mac, so need to try on windows/linux. i'd rather not have a windows machine be part of the pipeline at all

hardware

computer

after procrastinating about it for the entirety of last year, finally bought a used 3060. initial tests with it on linux (endeavour OS) did not go well in VR. haven't had chance to fully check over all drivers and/or try other distros.

might still need to use bad gaming laptop for some time yet, but the situation has until the windows 10 end of life deadline to improve, i suppose.
(goal is for no personal devices to ever get win11 or onwards, it'll be work or VM only from that point on)

headset

we've started saving a little money towards deckard... and although i've been pretty optimistic about hardware with rumours, seeing steamvr on linux first hand makes me wonder if we will see it this year.

we do at least want to try a vision pro if they do an in-store demo, but if manufacturing capacity is as limited as rumoured, i don't know that it'll even be sold here this year.
(the worry here is still "what happens if we like it"; again, hoping for a substantially price reduced v2)

otherwise, plan is to stick with the index until it breaks.
we have a spare cable now, which is the part most likely to fail - but if it breaks in some other way, with our backup quest 1 likely becoming obsolete even for virtual desktop...
well, coin flip between picking up a pico 4 as an emergency thing, or putting any deckard savings towards a Beyond (particularly if they do end up with an official eye tracking kit)

trackers

no purchases planned.

the slimes we ordered in 2022 should hopefully arrive sometime this year now that their issues with FCC certification have been sorted out.
i don't regret getting something else in the meantime, but it has verified that IMU based tracking was the right initial choice
given we're in VR around ~5am, trading off tracking quality for something that works under blankets is a very easy choice -
