ooh, a tricky one to answer with only bad ipad mini keyboard at our disposal
TL;DR: multiple layers of alternate universe and fictional company bullshit
so, Null Patch is the company that released the Dex games in-universe, and the name was later revived for a small studio taking on the remakes
when furality's theme was first announced, the absolute first thing we designed was a logo - "null space - a division of null patch"
and that was all well and good, and we designed some of the umbra stuff using it.
making the decision that either the different versions of me had either crash landed or something broke, forcing them to combine their regulation outfits with some of the umbra specific materials
but then the question became how all these different forms are attending
and why would a small game developer need a space division
so: alternate universe
null patch is one of the dominant megacorps on a galactic scale
and attracting good talent is difficult at that size
so, they "borrow" versions of employees from other universes, assuming that similar levels of competence and work ethic are generally inherent
and it's those borrowed versions that have found themselves on umbra
(in terms of competency and work ethic, me/the dragon is playing the role of dave lister, za yinglet is playing the role of cat, and the roo is playing (one of the better versions) of rimmer)
