a rollercoaster ride this morning of
- learning about gemini
- learning about the work that would be needed to get eleventy to output to gemini (reminder: the eleventy migration is only partially done for https://dexthedragon.co.uk, and not started for https://nullpat.ch - the latter of which is the main one i was thinking about)
- coming to the conclusion that for my purposes, a HTML without embeds or styling/"raw" Markdown 1 file would probably make more sense
i do like the goal of "one click = one HTTP request" for some situations.
however, i like that as a goal without the additional overheads and dependencies of completely separate certs and server software, as well as additional converters (particularly given part of the goal of the migration work is to reduce dependencies in the end)
i like that as a goal making use of software the user already has rather than asking them to install something new (even if the software they already have is Netscape Navigator) 2
having a motherfucking website is still possible in 2024, if that's what you want. 3 you don't need a new protocol to create something like that. it might be nice having those standards enforced while reading... but i already do a lot of web reading via RSS (it's how i found that post!), where i'm already more in control of how text gets presented.
anyway.
back to the things we should have been doing today.
-
still liquid processed to bring in templates
-
currently both https://dexthedragon.co.uk and https://nullpat.ch enforce HTTPS, which is a barrier to older browsers - if or when we do this, providing a plain HTTP version would be part of it. (i think both sites as they currently are would generally degrade pretty gracefully aside from the flexboxes in one nullpat.ch article so far - although the eventual plan is to make both sites a little more responsive and a little less of using tables for layouts, so after that point...)
-
(and i won't even include the google analytics script that undermines the point a bit)
