I know from experience that "giving up on online social interaction" is much, much easier than "getting an IRL social life started properly" and you may be left with a hole and nothing to fill it. I have fallen into that between-spot before (although it was not my choice to be pulled away from my online social sphere). It was bad.

so I would recommend not giving up on talking to people online unless you really do have a nice comfy group of friends you hang out with a lot IRL already and you're just gonna change the balance of how much time you spend doing what.

Figuring out how to use Fedi/Mastodon or whatever is a lot easier than figuring out how to fix your IRL social shit after 1.5 decades of being a shutin "hikkikomori with a job" type.

I feel for a lot of people, it's not figuring out how to set up a Mastodon account that's the issue, it's finding an instance that isn't in danger of being shut down, that's run by friends or other people you trust, and then still having to deal with people actively trying to jump down your throat because everyone there is still incredibly Twitter brained.
