order placed: september 2022
order arrived: today

something to test later - my key indicator has to be "how easy are these to work with at 5am"

but at least greater chance of staying cozy under blankets

an excellent start to attempting to test using mac

(also java, in this day and age???)

ok, definitely some teething problems (in this video, going from standing to sitting down, raising left leg, raising right leg). some of the mounting settings must be wrong/aren’t clear

i do think there’s some benefits here - despite initial impressions, the straps do seem a bit better on my broad paws than the tundras we got because we assumed these wouldn’t be coming this side of our birthday

but for the key question for us of “is this better/simpler at 5am than the tundras”…. no.

even if they were working 100% and ignoring the fact there’s 8 straps to deal with here rather than 3, then providing steamvr is working properly to connect the tundras, there’s still more to juggle in your head with these

maybe once december hits and it gets very, very cold again and we need to be under blankets
or if we have a reason to use vrchat without steamvr tracking?

(also when did cohost stop supporting AVIFs)

following that post yesterday, we've ordered the tundra trackers

and once again i am thinking about the statement "vrchat is the most expensive free-to-play game"

expensive in a familiar pattern as a pokemon go player; most of the spending around the game than inside it

and i wonder what would happen if someone totalled up all the avatars and accessories, computer components, headsets (including discontinued ones that need rescuing from eBay), trackers and other devices that friends have bought just for VRC, how much that figure would come to. what the average spend per friend is

i could get this figure for ourselves, at least
but i'm afraid to look

with slimevr's latest update, i feel like the chances of us getting ours before next furality/our birthday are pretty slim

i know we should probably just buy the tundras, but something just keeps us thinking about sony's mocopi.
they're a bad idea for multiple reasons (not officially released in the UK, as far as i know they're still pending updates where the hand trackers can be shifted to other points for better accuracy within VRC even if there are other ways of doing it)

but situationally, they feel like the trackers we'd probably be most likely to use
one thing to charge and keep track of
less bulky + working under blankets for laying in bed at silly hours in the morning

Looking at Sony Mocopi and I'm definitely not going to spend on it right now especially since my vrc avatar probably isn't full body ready BUT I kinda really want it even though I know it wouldn't be as good as getting a lot of Vive trackers and base stations.

It's just really appealing to me bc I like

  1. How tiny they are
  2. The case looks like it works like my sony earbuds which I really like
  3. I like that they're portable and could also be used for other stuff away from the computer

Other things that make me Interested which I'm not sure about:

  1. If I'm going to use the hand tracking from my controllers, does that mean I'd have two extra trackers for something else?
  2. $449 is a lot of money but it's still way less than base stations and 3-6 vive trackers ($150 each)

Yeah, I've debated them as well, even with a set of prebuilt Slime trackers on order - they seem really neat for mobile motion capture, and I have no idea when the Slimes will ship.

What gives me pause is that from the videos I've seen (such as this one), with VRChat as main use, they're going to be compromised in some way.

Sony's software is good at the motion capture side, but because it assumes those two have to be for hands, it will give worse performance in VRC than equivalents

There's an app to register the Mocopi trackers as SlimeVR trackers, which allows using the hand trackers for other things in VRC, but then switching back and forth is a pain if you do want to use motion capture.

And if using for just VRC, they work out more expensive than Slimes, though again, can actually get them if not DIY-ing.

just as an update on this - sony are planning an update to mocopi to enable the position switching for VR without having to register them as slimes

...if this update comes out, works well and my slimes haven't arrived, then i could be tempted, it'd be nice to do augmented reality photos or whatever as well
(assuming they're available in the UK)
