less because everything is now documented in ways it just wasn't when red and blue were newwe know definitively:

  • why it happens and why it's affected by your name (
    because talking to the OLD MAN temporarily stores your name in the encounter table, and that right strip of Cinnabar has encounters but doesn't reset the encounter table
    )
  • why it sets item 6 to x127 (
    the flag for if it was seen in the pokedex happens to be in a convenient location
    )
  • why the sprite looks like that (
    sprites are stored compressed; the decompression algorithm wasn't designed to deal with junk data and so tries its best with an invalid width/height
    )
  • why the hall of fame corrupts (
    the sprite decompression algorithm really wasn't designed to deal with junk data and ends up writing to places it really shouldn't
    )

but more because it's old, it's a little creepy, and someone has to be watching all those fake anti-piracy screen videos that show up when you read about some interesting actual piece of anti-piracy on TCRF and only find the fake ones if you go to search for it
