initial impressions

new rule: unless there's a giant monster involved somewhere, you're not allowed to call anything "kaijuice"
(and this isn't even the DLC's main content, just a side mission they added - some wingsuit challenges with a narrator who might say kaijuice any time you pass through a ring)

the rest of the dlc

so. previously spoken about how i like how saints row as a series is sincere with its parodies and homages; it wants you to be a thing of the things the devs were a fan of, etc.

The problem is, for this to work, it still needs to be more extreme than the thing it's parodying. And The Heist and The Hazardous isn't that.

(vague spoilers under the jump, mainly because I have a friend who wants to start SR2022 at some point)

you know what, i really didn't like the look of this from the trailers, but the trailers did a bad job of explaining what it is
and for what it is, it's pretty decent

be not your own boss

it's a roguelite mode. pick one of four pregenerated characters. each has a default weapon with unlimited ammo, a skill they can use in combat, and a unique passive ability.

open a randomly located chest to get a weapon with limited ammo. take down a randomly located arena battle with a special condition to get another passive ability, get 4 of them to win. win or lose you get xp to improve stats, and coins to buy more stuff that can show up in the pool.

the problem

this is fun for a few rounds. if the victory condition was just "win this with all four characters", that would be one thing; it might need a little grinding using the stronger characters to unlock more of the better passive abilities for the weaker ones, but it wouldn't be that bad.

i've said before on tumblr how one of the things i really appreciate about saints row 3 and 4 is that they're very silly games but sincere about what they're doing; something best exemplified by how the saints save christmas - something which wants you revelling in the joy of cheesy christmas movies with it, rather than trying to put them down

which brings me to the trailer for today's saints row (2022) dlc

i look at this and i so much wonder who it's for, what joy it's meant to be sparking, that i start debating if i've missed a reference
