also:

how all these years later, it sticks in the memory compared to other open world missions - even other saints row missions that attempted the same tricks

i think it's the combination of

  • catchy song that probably doesn't have stronger associations - when SR3 uses holding out for a hero later, any use of that has some ogre-sized boots to fill
  • mission is relatively early on
  • song kicks in at start of mission and plays throughout - a lot of others are just for segments. i can't tell you anything about the missions with enforced karaoke other than they have long drives for the karaoke to play out
  • unusual intro of immediately starting you with a skydive

(just a shame the song is by that guy)

initial impressions

new rule: unless there's a giant monster involved somewhere, you're not allowed to call anything "kaijuice"
(and this isn't even the DLC's main content, just a side mission they added - some wingsuit challenges with a narrator who might say kaijuice any time you pass through a ring)

the rest of the dlc

so. previously spoken about how i like how saints row as a series is sincere with its parodies and homages; it wants you to be a thing of the things the devs were a fan of, etc.

The problem is, for this to work, it still needs to be more extreme than the thing it's parodying. And The Heist and The Hazardous isn't that.

(vague spoilers under the jump, mainly because I have a friend who wants to start SR2022 at some point)

i've said before on tumblr how one of the things i really appreciate about saints row 3 and 4 is that they're very silly games but sincere about what they're doing; something best exemplified by how the saints save christmas - something which wants you revelling in the joy of cheesy christmas movies with it, rather than trying to put them down

which brings me to the trailer for today's saints row (2022) dlc

i look at this and i so much wonder who it's for, what joy it's meant to be sparking, that i start debating if i've missed a reference
