seeing another big company tear down the website of a subsidiary
and once again thinking how fucked the ability for future historians to observe this era will be when or if the internet archive goes down
(how much stuff will get deleted from wikipedia for no longer having a primary source?)
i've previously called this the entropy of the internet
but
that doesn't feel right
not for this
entropy is what will happen when we die and no one bothers or is able to renew our domains
entropy is websites changing and evolving but still in most cases trying to retain most of their stuff
entropy is a company running out of money
and it feels wrong painting a slash and burn operation
decades of clips and the like being torn down and replaced with a static streaming service ad
with the same brush
the difference between dying of natural causes
and being stabbed
how dare you try and visit a place on the internet
without a paid subscription
i colored and shaded a sketch @cfoxblu made for me bc i love it so much,,,
currently at about 2000 saved, 4GB
originally it was going oldest to newest, but then i had to restart the downloader and the restarted version is going newest to oldest, and is currently somewhere around january this year
got to about 15,000 saved, 20+GB
decided at this point to move it to the NAS rather than laptop's hard drive
good: we no longer fear being banned from FA for the bulk download
bad: because it currently feels like it's going at a rate of 1 per 5 mins
(and to save you the trouble, 57,000 images * 5 mins = about 197 days)
moved it from the NAS to a thumb drive; currently somewhere over 20K, 30GB
so far, there are 5152 accounts we've favourited at least one thing from, with the most frequent one so far being teaselbone... making it more surprising we've never commissioned them
