I’d never read Richard Sala until now, but The Chuckling Whatsit is fantastic; Sala constructs a rich, intricate world full of delirious whimsy and inky paranoia at equal measure, with really absolutely gorgeous cartooning with a turn-of-the-20th-century woodcut atmosphere.
