Been watching Helluva Boss recently cuz Luna wanted to watch it. Just finished season 1. Its growing on me but it also has some issues i hope improve as we continue to watch.
PROS
- genuinely really well animated
- ngl i do like when the show leans in on just being loony tunes except theyre allowed to say fuck. Im a simple woman.
- the jokes can feel hit or miss but when they do hit theyre pretty fucking funny imo
- Milly and Moxie are cute
- im getting more invested in Blitz and Stolas than i initially expected to
- the episode where blitz and moxie got captured by the govt was great and the fight scene fucking ripped. No notes, good stuff.
CONS
- in a vacuum theres nothing wrong with the character designs per se but in practice/motion holy shit some of these characters/palletes needed another design pass. When theres too much red on screen its almost impossible to read whats going on and theres some serious design overlap with some characters. Ex: Blitz and Moxie share a lot of visual motifs for seemingly no reason. The show often has tell to compensate for not showing
- Loona doesnt do jack shit i feel
- i think its rushing a few emotional payoffs maybe just a bit too soon.
- regarding the jokes and writing, something i noticed both here and in the hazbin pilot is how hell and characters relationship to debauchery/sin sometimes feels a bit inconsistent. Does X character love raunchy sex stuff or are they disgusted by it? It feels like it changes based on what the punchline needs. Also listen i love cursing and dirty jokes but sometimes Helluva Boss's writing tries too hard to shoehorn in expletives or raunchy shit into a sentence and it completely throws off the rhythm. It makes certain lines sound "written", not spoken, if that makes sense.
- please, a crumb of lesbians, please...
All in all, im enjoying it but Luna and i often have to stop mid-episode and discuss our feelings about certain creative decisions.
